If you’ve ever been around a “wine person,” you’ve inevitably heard the term Terroir mentioned. It’s a cool word, with a vague meaning. I translate it for ease of use as “sense of place,” it’s what makes a wine unique to where it’s from, and not every wine can exhibit Terroir. It’s what every region strives for, and no region anywhere in the world is more famous for its terroir than Burgundy. Although a geographically small area, the villages all have unique characteristics that make the wines identifiable even if they’re across the street from each other. It’s part of what makes Burgundy so coveted.
